FESTIVAL GUIDELINES

PLEASE NOTE:  The W. A. T. E. State Theatre Arts Festival is a W. I. A. A. sanctioned event and all W. I. A. A. rules and regulations must be strictly followed.  There is to be no use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco products while participating in this festival.  Drama teachers and chaperones are responsible for the conduct of their students.  Any student violating the rules of conduct will be sent home immediately at the cost of the student’s parents/school.  See WIAA handbook for clarification of these rules/regulations.

Participating categories for 2008 WATE Theatre Arts Festival are as follows:

One-Act Plays                                    Monologue Auditions

Play Cuttings                                      Technical Display/Portfolio

*Musical Cuttings                              Musical Auditions

#Collaborative Scenes                       #Collaborative Dance

Presentations must be done without make-up or costumes and with minimal props.  DO NOT BRING ANY SET PIECES.  The focus of adjudication is on acting and directing.  Make-up, costumes, props, and set pieces are non-essential to judging and will only hinder your set-up and strike time.  Storage space for set pieces is non-existent.  Minimal furniture will be available at each performance space.

All works should be performance level.  No “works in progress,” please.

ROYALTIES:  PARTICIPANTS/SCHOOLS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ROYALTIES PERTAINING TO THEIR PRESENTATIONS.  NEITHER WATE OR EWU WILL BE HELD LIABLE FOR ROYALTIES THAT ARE NOT PAID.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:  Please note the evaluation criteria forms in your registration packet.  It is in these areas that adjudication will be based.

REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION will be verified via e-mail (If you prefer another method of confirmation, indicate it on your registration form.)  Schedules (subject to changes) will be sent to participants via e-mail approximately two weeks prior to the festival.

ENTRIES:  To allow the largest number of schools to participate, WATE will limit the performances to two (2) per school.  This does not include the categories of musical cuttings, musical auditions, Jr./Sr. monologue auditions, or technical displays/portfolios.  Schools are allowed to bring one (1) additional production as a stand-by, but there are no guarantees made of its showing.  Priority for stand-by pieces will be given in the order that they are presented during registration at the registration desk.

TIME LIMITS:  Schools are expected to adhere to the time limits.  Since adjudicators and students are wishing to attend other sessions/performances and space may be needed for other scheduled events.

Straight Play Cutting/One-Act/Student Written Play:  Playing time is 40 minutes, with five (5) minutes for set, five (5) minutes for strike, and ten (10) minutes for adjudication.  (At the individual school's discretion, you may cut your set-up and strike time down for time to add to your playing time.)

Musical Cuttings:  Playing time is 50 minutes, with five (5) minutes allowed for set up and five (5) minutes for strike.  Time will be called at 40/45 minute marks.  (At the individual school's discretion, you may cut your set-up and strike time down for time to add to your playing time.)  Adjudication will be held in another location following the musical cutting as space permits.   These are to be done without costumes and set pieces.  For showcase presentation with costumes, see below.

MONOLOGUE AUDITIONSEach performer is allowed four (4) minutes total time for the performance.  An audition performance may include one (1) or two (2) monologues; including introductions.  Each school is permitted six (6) monologue auditioners.  The typical audition piece should include a standard performance introduction that identifies the performer, title of selection, author, and character portrayed.  No original works, please.   Standard audition pieces should consist of two contrasting monologues delivered back to back.  (Contrasting may be comedy/serious or contemporary/classical).  Minimal hand props are allowed.  Verbal adjudication will follow each audition.

MUSICAL AUDITIONS:  Each performer is allowed four (4) minutes total time on each performance that may include up to two (2) songs; including an introduction.  Each school is permitted six (6) musical auditioners.  The typical musical audition piece should include a standard introduction that identifies the performer, titles of songs, sources of songs, author, and character portrayed.  No original works, please.  Standard musical audition consists of two songs:  one ballad/one up-tempo (one of the songs may be a character song) that are presented back to back.  ALL PIECES SHOULD BE PERFORMED WITH ACCOMPANIMENT.  While we will endeavor to place musical auditions in rooms with pianos, please be prepared in the event that it is not possible.  Please bring cassette/CD players, and cassettes/CD’s.  Some rooms may have players in them, but the performer is ultimately responsible for their performance.   It is the performer's responsibility to have an operator for the cassette/CD player.    Verbal adjudication will follow each audition.

EVENING MUSICAL SHOWCASE (Non-Adjudicated):  Schools have 50 minutes for entire performance.  This time INCLUDES set-up and strike.  Schools may use costumes, props, etc.   Again, neither WATE or EWU has space available to store sets and costumes.  This is the responsibility of the performing school.  Please note on your registration form if you desire your musical cutting to be scheduled as both.

Non-Adjudicated Showcase Collaborative Musical Dance and Scenes:  Students in the musical showcase need to memorize the music that is sent in the registration packet and come to the collaborative sessions prepared for movement work.  Each school is allowed up to four students.  There is no audition for the musical showcase, just registration.  Students in the collaborative scenes need to memorize the role(s) for the scene(s) in which they have an interest (maximum of two different roles) and come to the festival memorized and prepared.  Scheduled scenes will be included in the registration packet. Auditions will be scheduled for each scene with the scene's director during sessions 4 or 5.  See entry form for showcase.
